Boasting some impressive specifications for a value headset I’m very hopeful about how it will perform.

Packaging and First Impressions

As you can see the box is rather plain and a little dented, but it is sturdy enough to withstand the postal service and protect its contents, so props for that.

The headphones were enclosed in a bubble wrap bag which did its job sufficiently, the 2-1 adapter was inside a zip lock bag and the manual was loose in the box with the aftercare guide. The manual gives a basic overview of the headset and includes a few FAQs to help with any hiccups, the aftercare guide has methods to contact EasySMX should the product go wrong.

Appearance

The headset’s aesthetics are appealing with the mostly black design, red accents and a chrome cap on each earphone. The majority of the headset is made from plastic with steel in the 2 bands to give it some rigidity and the build quality is acceptable for this price range however the plastic feels cheap. You do get a fully braided cable which adds some quality to it and, as I mentioned, the y-cable as well which adds value.

The LEDs on the earcups and end of the microphone are a nice touch at this price range and add to features on this headset.

Comfort

The headset is relatively comfortable, and the self-adjusting headband works – sort of; I personally find that it could do with a bit more resistance to avoid the earcups sliding too far down. The earcups are a bit large for my liking but have plenty of cushioning and the headset doesn’t weigh too much so it is comfortable to wear for longer periods of time. The headset controls on the back of the earcup are a nice touch, you can mute the mic, alter the volume and cycle the LEDs through on, off, breathing and circular rotation modes.

Sound Quality

For listening to music, the headset is adequate. The 50mm drivers provide good bass in songs and they can be loud (if you want), however I find some higher pitch sounds to be a bit tinny and not representative of the true sound. That being said, for a budget headset this performs respectably being able to produce some decent sounds and still allowing me to enjoy my music.

For communication and gaming the headset is average, there is no comparison when putting it up against my Razer Kraken, but the EasySMX COOL 2000 is only a fraction of the price. The mic is clear and loud enough while cancelling background noise as promised with no annoying buzzes or static noticed. Speech can be understood with no issues and the headset handles the multitasking of producing my friends voices and in-game audio at the same time absolutely fine, with both clearly understood. The in-game sounds are pretty good with special FX such as engine noise or gunfire sounding good at low pitch but again sounding a bit tinny at the high end of the spectrum. Background noise such as birds and the sea are blended in without issue and sound good and in game music and speech is outputted well.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • A decent bass on the headset for listening to music and playing games which compliment this.
  • Nice padded earcups and an adjustable headband mean it is comfortable for long sessions.
  • Great value for money, ideal if you’re on a tight budget.
  • LEDs with multiple modes and nice aesthetics to match a red, blue or orange build (depending on the LED colour you choose).

Cons:

  • A tinny sound at higher pitches means most songs and some games don’t sound as good as they could.
  • Rather large earmuffs mean the fit isn’t as snug as most headphones.
  • The cheaper plastic used to build them means they don’t quite feel or look highly durable (but this does help to reduce production costs)
